How Doctors and GPs Interpret Blood Pressure Readings
A single high reading is not a diagnosis. Blood pressure naturally fluctuates throughout the day in response to stress, activity, hydration, and caffeine.
Rule of the Highest Band
If your systolic and diastolic numbers fall into different clinical stages, your official category is determined by whichever number is higher. For instance, 138/94 mm Hg is Stage 2 because the diastolic is ≥ 90.
Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP)
MAP estimates the average pressure perfusing your vital organs during one complete cardiac cycle. A normal MAP sits between 70 and 100 mm Hg.
Pulse Pressure
Pulse pressure is the numerical difference between systolic and diastolic numbers (Sys − Dia). A pulse pressure consistently above 60 mm Hg often indicates arterial stiffness.
Questions to Ask Your GP at Your Next Appointment
Take your recorded readings and these questions to your next GP consultation:
- What is my personalised blood pressure target based on my age, medical history, and risk factors?
- Would home blood pressure monitoring twice daily be helpful for managing my treatment?
- Are any over-the-counter medications, supplements, or prescription drugs I take contributing to elevated numbers?
- What lifestyle adjustments (dietary changes, exercise, stress management) would have the greatest impact on my readings?
