The 5 Clinical Blood Pressure Stages

Defined by Hypertension Canada and AHA/ACC guidelines. A diagnosis requires measurements on at least two separate occasions.

Category Systolic (mm Hg) & / or Diastolic (mm Hg) Recommended Clinical Action
Normal < 120 and < 80 Maintain heart-healthy habits including a balanced low-sodium diet, regular physical exercise, and regular monitoring.
Elevated 120 – 129 and < 80 Take proactive lifestyle steps now to keep it from climbing into high blood pressure. Reduce sodium, manage stress, and track your numbers regularly.
High Blood Pressure (Stage 1) 130 – 139 or 80 – 89 Lifestyle modifications are strongly recommended. Consult your healthcare provider to review your cardiovascular risk and discuss appropriate monitoring.
High Blood Pressure (Stage 2) 140 or higher or 90 or higher Schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider promptly. Doctors typically prescribe lifestyle adjustments along with blood pressure medication.
Hypertensive Crisis Higher than 180 and/or Higher than 120 Wait five minutes and test again. If your numbers remain higher than 180/120 mm Hg, or if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, numbness, or vision changes, call 911 immediately.

Typical Blood Pressure Ranges by Age Bracket

Systolic pressure typically climbs as arterial elasticity naturally decreases over decades:

18–39 years
110–118 / 68–76

Vessels remain elastic; ideal baseline window.

40–59 years
118–126 / 74–82

Arterial stiffening begins; monitor annually.

60–69 years
124–134 / 72–80

Systolic rises as diastolic often peaks and plateaus.

70+ years
130–140 / 70–78

Isolated systolic hypertension becomes common.
